Here's a challange that anyone can join:
Start with a 2 x 8 brick, attach a 2 x 4 brick on it like so:

Then, add another 2 x 4 brick so that only one stud is attached to the 2 x 4
underneath it. Turn the new 2 x 4 so it touches the stud next to it, it should
now look like this:

Notice that the blue 2 x 4 is attached with it's left side to the right side of
the red 2 x 4, you can -of course- make the spiral twist in the other direction
if you like, just don't change direction once you get started.
You guessed it, add another 2 x 4 in the same manner:

Continue to do this, spiraling your way up:

How many 2 x 4 bricks can YOU stack in this manner?
Limitations are: No glue or other adhesives, just the 2 x 8 in the bottom (for
support) and the spiraling 2 x 4's. Don't put the 2 x 8 on a baseplate, don't
use other supports. It's just you and the bricks. You CAN, however, assemble
chunks of 2 x 4 spirals and then attach them to the sprial, you can build it
any way you like. Build it upwards, build it in modules or even build it
downwards. Just build it in the samme shape as I demonstrated above :)
Count ALL 2 x 4 bricks used, even the one attached to the 2 x 8.
I managed 16 and I almost lost self control when it collapsed for the fifth
time (especially the time I had 16 stacked but it collapsed as I put it down on
the table). I do have a photo of this but can't upload it from work... I tried
with 16 and suceeded, I'll have to try 20 or so next.
There is of course a limit to what can be done as the weight increases on the
botton one-stud connection, but where is it?
I think this would make great fun at LUG-meetings, especially if someone bumps
into the table :)
Best regards,
/Tobbe
