What about the relative numbers of MOCs, then versus now? I don't have the
figures, but I'm sure the community is much larger now, the number of MOCs
too. But the time available for giving feedback doesn't increase ==> less
feedback/MOC/individual.

I can only answer for myself here: I read the groups with a newsreader -
download the groups I want, and then read off-line (modem connection is
neither fast nor free).
This means that I can't look at a MOC directly, I must bookmark the post,
and remember to revisit the next time I'm connected, then remember my
thoughts for X MOCs while writing responses (off-line). This just doesn't
happen...
But that doesn't mean I dislike the MOCs!
I don't know how representative my user pattern is...
