Well, I for one am not so impressed with this new enthusiasm for Lego
ethnicity.
Firstly, the NBA players appear to be standard height minifigs. Now maybe it's
just a consequence of living upside down here in Australia, but when I look at
NBA players, they all look really tall to me. Now if they added a 1x2 brick (of
some appropriate colour or with printing/sticker) between the legs and torso,
then the minifigs would look tall. Alternatively, we have the new short-legged
minifigs (in the HPS sets) so why not have a new long-legged minifig.
Secondly, take a look at the 5025 Caucasian family, 5089 African family, 5090
Asian family and 5091 Hispanic family in the Explore (Duplo) range. I feel the
"racial segregation" of these families sends a not-nice message (we should
marry within our own "kind"). I would much rather see a set like the 2772
World People (released in 1992) which shows people of different ethnicities in
the same set, although I'd probably prefer to call it Community Folk and for it
to contain minifigs of a variety of intermediate skin-tones (reflecting the
huge number of mixed ethnicity people in our communities and indeed our own
families). My baby nephew is half-causasian and half-African; why shouldn't he
have mixed race Duplo figures just like him as he gets older? Why should Lego
teach him that people come in 4 distinct races?
And while they are doing that, lets increase the number of female minifigs,
sadly discriminated against in the Lego world!
