I was reading an interview today over at Kanohi-Power.com with "Michael," a
PR guy with LEGO.  His answer to this question caught my eye...

Q: Do you think we'll see more story line based sets in the future since
Bionicle is selling so well?
A: If you look at the LEGO System of play, it really is all about telling
stories.  Our traditional LEGO play theme products all have basic story
lines and characters.  Licensed products like Bob the Builder, Harry Potter
and Star Wars all are story telling lines.  Even our LEGO Studios line of
moviemaking products encourages kids to use LEGO elements to tell their own
stories.  So, yes, certainly, there will be more in the future.

Now, I know there are many folks (myself included) that think adding a
storyline inhibits play with LEGO bricks slightly... and if TLC is riding
everything on this concept, then that doesn't really bode well for the future.

What are your thoughts?

As far as I can remember, lego has been about imagination. People should be
able to make up there own stories. Another thing that prevents creativity
and imagination is juniorisation. We are being given less and larger peices
which does not allow us to build what we like from any set anymore.

Hear hear!  I wholeheartedly agree.

The sets I had as a child had great 'themes' perhaps... but no real stories
that I remember drawing directly from the sets.  I didn't need them. The
stories came from my head and were applied to the wonderful landscape that
LEGO provided.

I think of the early Police Headquarters, Fire Station and Hospital and I
remember a town that was well protected with city services.  :)

These are the memories I keep thinking of as I see things today.  I know we
can't go back 25 years, but.... oh you know what I'm going to say.

Regards,
Allan B.

I totally agree that Lego is about imagination - building whatever you can dream. If the entire "story" is prepackaged that can inhibit imagination. The exception is if the story is sufficiently vague as to be more of a starting point for creativity (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.general)
