Good observations Tore!

The #049 Samsonite Parts pack you have was made from around 1968-71
(possibly earlier).  Here is where you can find it in a late 1960's
Samsonite catalog (from the Bill Katz/Joe Lauher website):

Interesting enough is that the illustration of the tree (along with 2
windows) from the 049 Samsonite parts pack, shows the (European Only) 1950's
Elm Tree that was discontinued around 1960-61.  I have seen many many
pictures of 1960's sets that showed the 1950's trees.

The 1960's flat trees that Samsonite made for USA/Canada were the same as
those in Europe with 2 exceptions:  1) the Samsonite versions were ALL
unpainted (all green), and 2) only the Pine trees and Bushes were produced
by Samsonite.  The Oak tree, Birch tree, Cypress tree, and Apple tree were
not sold in the Samsonite (North American) market. (NOTE:  the 725 -
Samsonite Town Plan set might be the only exception to this, but this has
not been verified.)  On all European (TLC) flat trees, the tree trunks were
painted black/brown (and in the case of the Birch, with some white).  And in
the case of the European Apple tree, some had red painted apples, some did
not.

The Samsonite trees also came in several variations, there were "Hunter"
green Pine trees, and some lighter "blue-green" Pine trees.  I have both
variations.  The bushes, AFAIK only came in the darker Hunter green.

Hmmm... this has me thinking.  The "flat" trees of the 50's and 60's (along
with the granulated trees of the early 70's) would make an excellent topic
for "The History of Lego" series.......  I'll have to do some more research.

It's not even in mentioned in any set reference, so I consider it rare.
My question is: are those trees common, since noone even bids $1.00 for
12 or 13 of them? (Picture shows 13, but seller says 12...).

I am pretty sure they were only made by Samsonite, since I've never seen
them in Europe, other than the set I bought from USA or Canada.

Thanks,
