Today, 11/18/00, I just purchased some of the new Life On Mars sets from
Toys R Us.  While they may not be released in all parts of the country yet,
they are available in the Southeast(or at least where I live in the
Southeast).  As well as Life On Mars, the new Studios sets are also now
John ,can you tell if that new'exploding bank' set has the light grey
windows (like those 3 payne 4x6 windows from century skyway)or is it the
darker grey?
Every one of the Life On Mars sets has the mini-figs shown on top, and
states their name, the Martians are named things like "Nova", and "Altair".
Also important is on the back of the boxes the construction of the sets are
shown.  The backs depict how the parts connect from multiple views, in a way
previously unseen on other boxes.
The Monojet, and possibly others, have a new color-the light blue.  They
look like ordinary blue parts that have been left out in the sun, and can
best be described as sky blue.  Also new is a form of the hinges, now they
produce horizontally jointed hinges, with a variation of the Aquanaut arms
redesigned for their new hinge system.  A typical Martian has the battle
droid body and arms, but completly new head and legs.  The legs DO NOT fit
onto normal bricks, which will probably mean lots of loose figures.
After inspecting the booklet I have come up with a theory about the entire
line.  The "Aero Hanger Base" has docking stations in blue and red.  7316
also comes with the same type of base in the color of the mech, leading me
to believe that the three mechs connect to the color-coded bases.  Without
the mechs the Aero Hanger Base loses function, with only mechs and no base
the mechs cannot dock.  7316 might also connect to the third "hanger" on the
base as well.  If you look closely you can see a small platform on the red
and blue hangers, perfect for zooming a Martian to their mech quickly.  All
of this combines to make a system that only works fully when you buy all of
the individual sets.
The Studios sets I saw I cannot really rate, because I am solely a Space
fan.  The Explosion and Motion studios do appear to be interesting, though.
It does seem to appear that they are being marketed as a Studio THEME, not
as actual make-a-movie sets, based on the pictures of new sets.
The Life On Mars and Studio lines are pretty interesting, and from the
several I have purchased, might be enough to interest those Lego fans who
are about to sell their collections in anger at Lego.  Sometime soon these
new sets will begin to show up on eBay, and then everyone can rate them for
themself.  Hopefully they will restore hope in Lego.
P.S.I will begin posting pictures on Brickshelf of the Life On Mars boxes,
just check the new additions for them.
