The following is a summary of information from articles in the Orlando
Sentinel newspaper on July 8th and July 10th:
On Sunday, July, 9th, the 3rd annual International Autonomous Underwater
Vehicle Competition was held at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. The event
was co-sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International
and the Navy.
Twelve teams of students (11 colleges and 1 high school) competed for a
$10,000 prize by building AUV's to retrieve an orange ring which was giving
off audio and visual signals. The first 2 years competitions were won by the
Massechusetts Institute of Technology.
This years winner was the University of Rhode Island "who made Lego pieces
a critical component of their submarine". None of the teams recovered the
ring, but "URI got closest, the only team to detect the beacons's strobe".
URI took home $4,000 of the prize money.

| (...) ^^^^ Lucky for use the URI guys didn't succeed: if they had, the DOD probably would've put Technic angle beams on the COCOM list... Ran (24 years ago, 12-Jul-00, to lugnet.general)
