First off, explain that yes, guns are designed to kill, but they have lots of
other important uses too. See:

Kids will make "guns" out of their fingers and swords and rifles out of
sticks. It really just seems to fascinate even the most peaceful children.

Maybe you could look for other ways to use them as building elements, having
your Minifigs beating their swords and guns into plowshares...

(Of course, then, the blockmen would come in with their evil looking M-16
