I finally broke down and got a speed computer <set:5206>
(http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=5206).  I was hoping to find out
what its capabilities were first, but couldn't find anything very useful.
Hopefully this post will answer any questions others might have.

I ordered it from S@H, where I payed $22 for it.  Besides the display and
sensor units (which are connected by a fixed 5 3/4" (15cm) wire), there are a
small number of technic elements in the box - enough to build a very simple
vehicle, plus a couple extra connectors.

On http://www.lugnet.com/trains/?n=5939 someone asked about setting the wheel
diameter.  The measurements are in 1/3 brick units.  It starts at 2 and goes
up to "12=" (12 bricks plus two plates).  The default when you get it is "3_"
(3 bricks, one plate).

I scanned the relevant parts of the instructions page, where you can get an
idea of how to use it.  See http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?
i=7062.

The display has 4 digits, which causes some limitations.

The distance measurment can be in revolutions (0.3 is the smallest increment),
meters or feet.  When any of the distance measurements are maxed out at 9999,
that counter is stopped, though the other ones keep going.  Revolutions is
measured in 10ths up to 100, when the decimal point is dropped.  Meters starts
at 100ths, drops to 10ths at the 10 meter mark, and  also drops the decimal
point altogether at the 100 meter mark.  Feet are the same.  You can measure
up to 1.89 miles (9999 feet) or just under 10Km (9999 meters)!

Time is in 1/10ths of a second, and can go up to 9 minutes, 59.9 seconds,
after which the timer stops counting.

Speed is in RPM, KM/H, or MPH.  The unit maxes out at around 4000 RPM,
displaying ---- after that.  Whenever the unit detects no more motion, after
about a second, the display will start flashing.  In the speed mode, the
number flashed is the highest speed attained thus far.

All measurements are made while the axle through the sensor unit is turning.
The direction doesn't matter, forwards and backwards are the same.  And if the
axle stops turning, the timer keeps counting for about a second before
stopping.  If you start again, all the measurements continue where they left
off, ignoring the pause, for the timer, though.  When displayed, time is
updated every 1/10 of a second, but the other measurements are updated about
once a second.

I wish there were some way to hook it up to an RCX as a sensor, (where the
input was whatever was displayed on the unit, for instance) but unfortunately
there isn't.  That would have been ultra cool!
