I've got a long-time question, and for some reason it's taken until now for it
to occur to me to ask someone...
What's the official part count in a mini-figure? Why is it that things like
hats, tools, airtanks, etc., are not counted?
A perfect example are these Samsonite mini-figure accessory packs. Take #0012,
the two red spacemen. Todd gave this a tentative part count of {8}. Now, I'm
no dummy, but this places a part count of 4 for each spaceman.
If we tally up all the individual molded parts in there, there's two each of
legs, torsos, heads, helmets, airtanks, and walkie-talkies, for a total of
twelve. Which parts aren't counted, and why? It's not like there's no studs
on the walkie-talkies. They are, in all technical senses, "real" pieces.
They're parts. Why shouldn't they be counted? In all ways, this odd
"segregation" seems arbitrary.
TLC does this, too...I've counted up a few smaller sets and they almost always
attribute only 3 or 4 pieces per mini-figure, ignoring accessories.
Weird.

| (...) Joshua Delahunty has a very good understanding of these rules (having deduced them from analyzing hundreds and hundreds of piece counts), but he also says there are anomalies that pop up from time to time. The one rule which seems to hold up (...) (25 years ago, 21-Mar-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.admin.database)
