I've recently purchased a copy of the original Racers (an opened
package without a manual). I got a really good price on it, but....
Perhaps the absent manual would have shed more light on the subject,
but I find that it keeps crashing. It works well most of the time, but
occasionally the program just spontaneously aborts (no errors
reported). This usually happens when a weapon strikes a car and the
car is launched into the air. You can see the car go up, but at the
point when it should be coming down again, the program aborts. This is
the most frequent incident. I might get through several races, but
sooner or later it gets me.
I've only managed to play an entire circuit three times without
getting dumped out of the program, but in all three cases, I was
dumped again before the second circuit (I'm assuming there is one from
what I've read here since people are making references to tracks I
haven't seen and the box makes a reference to running tracks backwards
- I've never gotten to this point)
I'm running WinME with 64 MB Ram, a 48x CD player and (unfortunately)
only a P133 without a 3D accelerator. it's still quite playable at
this speed (although somewhat jerky) and I would expect that if it was
the lack of 3D acceleration it would crash either right away or every
time a car is hit, but it's only occasional. As for the P133, I
wouldn't expect any problems with it (other than slow speed - which
shows) unless of course Racers uses instructions that the P133 doesn't
support, but again, I would expect that if this was the case, It would
crash either right away or every time a car is hit instead of the
occasional (but inevitable) problem I'm experiencing.
Also, for what it's worth, I selected the maximum installation.
Any ideas?
