Ken,
As you can see, these "macaroni bricks" got their name due to their shape. They
have been produced by TLC since the very first LEGO blocks came out in 1955.
There were also half circle bricks as well (from 1955-57 only) and both half
circle and quarter circle bricks came with and without the missing notch of
plastic on the bottom of the outside curve (the half circle bricks came with and
without 2 missing notches of plastic). I have a rare 1956 Danish parts pack
#1226 that has all 4 types. For some reason in 1958 TLC eliminated 3 of the 4
types, and we are left with the macaroni bricks that we have today. I have
stated before that it would be nice to have the macaroni bricks without the
notch as well as with the notch. It creates a rather unsightly "Swiss Cheese
effect when they are assembled into columns (just look at the Jefferson Memorial
in the Legoland displays). Ditto for the 4x4 quarter circle bricks.
