...Still recovering... likely will be for some time. But I wanted to try
and capture some of my favourite images of the fest. I know I will think
of at least twice as many entries tomorrow, but I wanted to quickly fire
off the first batch of things I remember and thought were just great
(For anyone who's name I forgot, I'm sorry... I'm horrible with names!!)
- Best use of lots-and-lots of white : The Hoth battle scene
- The "I'm going to build an even better giant ship this time" Award :
Lindsay's Giant Japanese Destroyer Model
- Best way to move brick from the scree to the floor : Steve's X-bot
scree run entry
- Best attempt at the scree run : Bob's little bot that just couldn't
get going
- Best loophole finder : Steve's giant-stick bot that won the scree
competition :-)
- Best use of left monkey arms : Shiri's free-style monkey-pede
- Best Catch Phrase : "So you say your name is.... Bob?" (preferably
with hat lifting)
- Best use of the alphabet : Jon's alphabet fighters
- Best faux-pas : Christina loudly proclaiming "We have lots of balls!"
(in reference to lost soccer balls)
- Most organized : John Barnes for making Mindstorms a significant
presence this year
- Best new-arrival at BrickFest : Mindstorms! It went from a tiny side
item last year to a whole track with major events and presentations
- Best use of a candy machine : Suz's candy machine full of minifigs
- Best use of all available floor-space in a room : The two train rooms
that collectively had maybe 2 square feet of free space between them
- Best carnival-themed MOC : The fully functional "Flying Bob" MOC
- Best use of soccer balls : The plinko-pinball game
- Best use of way-too-many Technic beams : The giant fully-functional
Technic crane
- Best entry by Adrian : "The Best White Ship" free-style MOC (great use
of a Bionicle staff as a gun)
- Best category that Adrian didn't enter : The Animation Festival put on
by Todd Thuma
- "I can sculpt anything out of random brick" award : Judy Miller for
her free-style work
- Best building of hype : Jeff Ardis for his Spybotics demo... I'm
really looking forward to it now and hope we can have some kind of
competition with them next year :-)
- Best collection of large structures : All the beautiful castles in the
castle room (as well as many smaller buildings detailed both in and
out)
- Best inventive use of a piece : Jim Fould's use of fiber-optic pieces
as fountains
- Best use of pink : Greg Perry's giant pink house
- Best way to scatter minifigs across the floor : The pirate game. Was
big fun to watch when I could this year... especially with the tons
of dead minifigs floating in the water :-)
- Best use of tables : The huge train/town display.
- Best roundtable : The Space Community getting organized!
- Best use of the floor : A close tie between the pirate game and the
excellent walled castle community project
- Best sponsor (part 1) : the No-Starch-Press guy (Bill? damn I'm bad
with names :-/ who wandered around and really interacted with the
community and the fest
- Best sponsor (part 2) : Dario with Mindstorm's Java who really put on
some great presentations about using Java with Mindstorms and who
helped plot out some challenge ideas for next year
- Best donation from LEGO : Clonetrooper helmets!!!
- Best work under pressure : The badge guys who put up with all the last
minute changes to the awards
- Most impressive train : The WWII military train
- Other most impressive train : The beautifully detailed steam engine
(4-6-4 Hudson IIRC)
- Best fun train : The little train car with the tiny model train moving
around the top
- Best find at The Fest : A Nestle Quick bunny!
- Best use of light bricks : The movie theater with lighted billboard
MOC
- Best creative building : the police department with the moving
interior cops-and-robers scene
- Best surprise : Clear macaroni bricks in the new train cars!
- Best conference organizer : Christina
- Best at keeping the registration mess under control : Denise
- Best interesting device : Kevin's "Geek Cam". A cam-on-a-hat so we
could broadcast from everywhere in the fest!
- Best Company : LEGO for sending several reps who were great to
interact with and who added so much to the fest
- Best fans : Everyone who made this their first Fest!
- Even more best fans : Everyone who made this their _third_ BrickFest!
- Best sweet-moment-of-revenge : The guy who stormed out of the fest
because we wouldn't let him get his son in free (he claimed the
website said 12 and under free?!?!?!). Later, his number came up
first for the Statue of Liberty drawing.... bwahahahahahaha!!!!!
