On the weekend of July 12th and 13th, NELUG participated in the LEGO 2003
Summer Roadshow Tour in Boston Common.  The weather was great on both days
with no rain and temperatures going no higher than the low eighties.
Attendance was fantastic on both days, so much so, that people actually wore
a path around our tent.

As for our display, we had a variety of things for the visitors to see.
Since this was a chance for us to do a non-train display, we decided to
create a number of smaller zones in our display.  We had five major zones:
1. Train Loop/Bridge
2. Medieval Area
3. General MOCs
4. Amusement Park
5. Quarry

The Train Loop/Bridge allowed us to display some of our cuter train MOCs
like the piggyback car and the handcar while showing off a train bridge that
we built specifically for the show (I'm sure you will be seeing it at future
train shows).  As you can see from some of the photos below, it wasn't
exclusively train related with a Panzer VI sitting there, but with so little
space available, we needed to make use of it.

The Medieval area was actually displayed at the Roadshow's kickoff down in
Enfield.  It too was built specifically for the Roadshow.  Featuring picnics
by both humans and dragons, buried treasure, killer bunnies, archery
contest, a wizard/dragon battle and so much more, people loved looking at
all of the small sub scenes going on.

Beside the Medieval area was the General MOC area.  This area contained a
bunch of smaller MOCs that various NELUG members created with the pieces of
the Designer sets.  It also contained a number of other MOCs contributed by
other members.

Continuing around the display, the Amusement Park was next featuring 7
moving rides, concession stands, clowns, and oh so many visitors.  The
Amusement Park, born from our train shows, continues to be a huge draw and
worked very well on its own.  People just love to see things move.

Finally, we had our single largest community project on the display, the
Quarry.  The Quarry, built for the Roadshow, was fully automated like the
Amusement Park, but went much further in that all the pieces talked to one
another, thus making a fully functioning system.  Starting with the steam
shovel, the shovel would scoop up gravel, turn and dump it into a dump
truck.  The dump truck would then back up to the cliff edge and wait for the
bulldozer to get into position.  Once it was, the dump truck dumped the
gravel down the side of the cliff.  The bulldozer then set off and pushed
the gravel to the end where a lift would dump the gravel into a conveyor
system.  The conveyor system would then bring the gravel from the lowest
level, up to the highest level and into the canister at the top.  The
canister is what holds the gravel and waits for the shovel to scoop again to
dispense its contents and the cycle begins all over again.  We only had
about 5 weeks to bring it all together, but we are quite pleased with the
results (*especially* on Day 2).  There is a video which shows the entire
operation working, but be forewarned, it is just shy of 51MB!  Though if you
can handle the bandwidth, it is worth it.  There will be a separate post
about the Quarry itself shortly.

Lastly, we all had a great time!  While it was more work than your typical
train show due to sending child after child on a hunt for something on the
display in order to get their sticker, it was a great experience.  The
Roadshow crew was easy to work with and the Park Rangers were absolutely
fantastic and ensured everyone had a great time.
