April 12, 2004. For the first time in Orange County, The Country House Arts
Center presents Eric Sophie’s Biomechanical Bricks - Original Lego Creations by
Eric Sophie. Among other creations that will be on display April 17 (12-5 pm)
and 18 (12-3 pm) that Mr. Sophie will demonstrate is the mechanical robot called
the “Jamocklaquat”, a 50 inch tall robot that uses a computer to control its 41
motors. All of Mr.Sophie’s robots are non-violent and feature natural looking
Biomechanoids. Come see Chili the Dog!
NYC born Eric Sophie (and self taught Legomaster) began building with Lego as a
child. His family moved a lot and Lego became his solace and focus as he
adjusted to new surroundings. In his teens his prowess increased and he realized
the far-reaching capabilities of the Lego system as an artistic medium. In the
early 1990’s he won a model-building contest at the Newport Mall in New Jersey.
Next was his first purpose-built sculpture: A 3 ft. tall winged robot. There
are many ways to use Lego and Eric has chosen the robot and biomechanical forms,
often with an insect-like look. This incorporates nature into a mechanical
format.
3 years in the making Eric Sophie’s six foot long robotic Praying Mantis was
taken to performances where friends played music and did poetry readings
featuring the Mantis in nightclubs. At events and shows like these Eric began to
be called the Legomaster. Next Lego asked Sophie to use his robot pictures for a
story about people that build Lego as art for the Lego web-site where two of his
works are featured: Praying Mantis and the Super Mech-Bot.
Now as a full-time Independant Lego Artist, Sophie has done displays like a
Comic Book Store in Bayonne, New Jersey where he has rented his robots for
window displays. He has also done consultant work for the Educational System
using the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotic Invention System, as well as gallery exhibits
and demos.
Admission: $8 adults, children are $3 includes refreshments and a special Lego
Building room for adults and children. Reservations are recommended. Call
