NCLUG participated in the Charlotte What Will You Create Truck Event, held over the Halloween weekend in te Arboretum Shopping Center, just outside of the city.

Because the currently active membership of NCLUG is primarily based in Raleigh, which is about 3 hours away, the club was at a distinct disadvantage in terms of setting up a display, as the logistics were prohibitive in terms of scheduling for setting up a larger train layout. Another difficulty was that the members with the larger setups were not available to be in Charlotte that weekend.

It was decided that the best way to approach this display was to do a good show for one day, Saturday, November 1. A plan was made to use a two-table layout, with one table devoted to flight (we are North Carolina, after all) and the other table devoted to train and town models, with Mike Walsh providing a train station and the High Speed train as well as the Wright Flyer. I made an ‘affordable house’ and a third car for the high speed train Halloween night. I also provided some plane models, including my Redbird, and X-29, and .Space Paparazzi’s shuttle. Gareth Bowler brought his Y-Wing and B-Wing.

Cyndi Bradham brought the Metroliner and a Airport Shuttle, Main Street and the Creekside Cafe. She also brought the Sopwith Camel and the Fokker triplane. And with these, we had a display. So we were set to meet atthe Charlotte destination...

and Gareth and I were early...

but once Grant from the Lego group came in, we took off:

And Thomas Main brought in a mosaic of...well...

The first of many surprises began when Dane Daugherty showed up with some Star Wars Minis that were very well done:

Dane is also the person interested in starting a LUG in the Charlotte Area, and he met Thomas Main, Pete Stoffel, and Tom Hohmann, all AFOLS in the area. Tom H. also is developing a racing game for LEGO at www.speedbrick.com

We had an activity for everyone to participate in: Find the Hidden Minifig, which had a NCLUG shirt on: (this wasn’t one of the three figs:))

Another surprise was meeting a guy by the name of Lyle, who built a mecha: (yes, he used Mega Blox...but we let it slide:))

He also built a shark mech:

And the best surprise was this: done by a 12-year-old!!!

And at the end: we did the group photo with the Master Builder who gave us comments on our models and chatted with us:

from left: Hi Cyndi, hi me!, hi Erik, hi Vangie, hi Gareth, hi Lyle, hi Thomas!

The best thing that happened was just hearing the children (and adults) finding the minifigs, and also having a good time with good company. And a good company:)!

Thanks to: Mike Walsh for providing train models and the Wright Flyer, Cyndi Bradham for the Airport Shuttle, Creekside Cafe, Main Street, Fokker Triplane, and Sopwith Camel, Gareth Bowler for bringing his Y-Wing and B-Wing, Thomas Main for bringing his mosaic, Dane Daugherty for his minis, and Pete Stoffel, and Tom Hohmann and Lyle (no last name)for visiting!

And thanks also to Grant and Erik with the Truck Show and Jake from Lego Community Relations...we gotta do this again!!

Galleries of this can be found : here (my pix) and here (Thomas Main’s pix)

And you can go to www.nclug.cc and there’s another writeup in the photo albums!
