Scans of old set # 1031 at
http://www.brickshelf.com/scans/1000/1031/index.html
provide instructions for educational models of simple machines.

The mostly simple instructions include:
- How Technic parts fit together
- Triangles for strength
- Gears changing speed and direction
- Pulley wheels and lifts
- Levers
- Changing circular to & from linear
- Centrifugal force & whirling rides
- Weighing beam scale
- Steering simply & advanced
- Water and wind power

The scans include pictures of real machines next to the LEGO models.  This
set looks very much like LEGO Dacta educational sets, but it does not
include student worksheets.
