I'm pretty sure they were intended to compete with MegaBlox which had
been producing similar tubs at similarly cut-rate prices.  Lego's 3033
(just about?) completely annihilated the competition.  Now that there
is no competition for that (I don't think MegaBlox makes them anymore)
Lego can safely discontinue the blue tubs, which were probably not
profitable at only $19.95 (when you include the costs of distribution,
etc.).

I doubt anything LEGO makes, now or at any time in the past, could be
classified a loss leader.  There is not $19.99 worth of raw materials and
packaging in that tub.

That's a shame. I consider the Blue Tub (3033) a staple set amongst AFOLs
everywhere.

I think an argument could be made that it might also be a staple for some
KFOL's (Kid Fans of LEGO).  Somehow they always get lost in discussions like
this.

Given the current selection of Technic sets, I think a bulk set of basic
Technic parts is necessary. Leave out the styling panels and all the other
useless parts that dominate existing Technic sets. Just offer the plain,
basic "building blocks" of Technic.

I agree 100%.  Core bricks.  Core building techniques.  Wow!

Has anyone heard anything about a "sculptures kit"? I seem to remember
reading something a while back about Lego offering bulk sets of bricks and
plates for the purpose of sculpture building. That would be a step in the
right direction.

I also agree with this idea.  Surely 'brick' based sets/tubs like these will
make a come back someday.  They can't possibly let these pure LEGO sets slip
out of their catalog entirely.

Regards,
Allan
