I use these on my spaceship but I could easily see them as dark thick
windows on a castle keep or possibly in a more modern town structure.

First, they are mailboxes, NOT safes!

Safes!

Just to jump in on this with a few thoughts:

I would not call them safes for two reasons:

  1. that is a fairly recent use of the part, it is much older than the • wild
west sets

  2. how many safes have you ever seen that have a slot almost large • enough
for a person to stick their hand into?

I'd be strongly inclined to call them mailboxes because of the slot, • which
conveniently allows a 1x2 mail tile to be pushed through (of course it • also
allows a money tile or gold coins to be put through).

Other things they could be called:

- lockers
- drop boxes (which includes mailboxes, but also think about your library • or
video store after hours drop box)
- refrigerators (though most refrigerators open from the side not the • top)
- washing machine
- dishwasher

They also appeared in Classic Space as storage containers
of unspecified uses.  (eg <set:6844>)

You get the idea, they have lots of uses. I'd be curious as to what their
first use actually was for.

Same here.  I'm wondering if they first appeared in Town
specifically as a mailbox (my guess).
