I believe that many English longbowmen also used quivers that strapped to their
lower leg. This would be fine if the archer was standing still, but obviously
he couldn't walk around with it.
As far as Lego crossbows and quivers go, I always found it odd that sets that
contained crossbow pieces didn't include quivers (unless a bow piece was also
in the set) until the Defense Archer. Because of this, I have a rule in my
Lego Combat wargame that figures with a bow must also wear a quiver, but
figures with a crossbow do not.
Of course, this doesn't make any sense in the real world... you need a
place to hold your ammunition whether they are bolts or arrows. This just
seems to be part of the "Lego Reality" that can be inferred by looking at
various sets. Why don't Lego crossbowmen need a quiver? Because TLG didn't
create enough quivers to go with all the crossbows!
There are many other unusual rules of Lego Reality. There is the fact that
some years ago, horses evolved into a different sort of "single piece" animal.
This new horse creature proved to be much sturdier, with much less of a
tendency to fall apart or go to pieces.
Also, in about 1986 or so, all merchants disappeared from the Castle Lands.
Where did they go? Who knows?
What other quirks about Lego Reality are there?
