I like your "generic building." It's very tight with nice color
coordination.
On the gate house, it does seem a bit plain. You could consider adding a
fancier roof or make the top look like an add-on structure in a different
color.
On my castle, I made the gate house a completely different color so it would
stand out a bit more (I stole the top design from an old LEGO idea book).

By the way, have you considered doing anything with the wild-west "wood"
pieces? I was able to build a medieval-looking house, although it was quite
a challenge. I had to put the "wood" pieces going crosswise (i.e. the walls
are really thick so that the facade only shows the wood being one stud wide.
I only have a long-shot of it. I'm not sure how well you can see it

lower-left. I've actually expanded it and hope to post some better pictures
in a few weeks. )
