With quivering hand the figure grabs at the scorched and blackened ulna and continues scratching out the summoning hexagram into the cool, hard ground. Initially startled by the seeming shift of shadows and sudden change in room atmosphere, he hesitated but now continues with the ritual. His own jittery movements shake the very cap on his head to at first sit askew, then finally topple to the floor with the tinkling of bells. With renewed vigor his face contorts into a demonic rictus. Unsure if his personality is still his own, he can feel the invading presence of a more powerful entity like a frozen, piercing dagger at the back of his mind. “The price will be worth it,” he mutters under his breath, “my vengeance will be felt!”. And two of the scrawled object symbols begin to take shape, first the maiden, now the knight.

While the Skeleton Army theme only lasted through 2007, it would appear the Lego Group had one more set to release with the 7079 Drawbridge Defence (defense?) set. Let’s take a look.

This set is comprised of a four-story tower with a drawbridge that spans a short length of water, ending on a stone embankment with a ramp leading to ground level (very reminiscent of 1995’s 6078 Royal Drawbridge). Packaging suggests the tower is being held by a few royals under siege from an undead contingent.

The tower and embankment structures are solid, well-designed constructions. The bottom level of the tower is basically just a hollowed out cave with the second level comprised of a small landing with mounted crossbow defenses. The third level houses the drawbridge mechanism (nicely implemented using chain elements instead of threads) and the open-air top of the tower features a flick-missile mini ballista. There are no visible access methods for getting from one level to another. The add-on embankment is no throw-away structure, but is comprised of about thirty bricks. It features two ground-level torch sconces and some foliage. All three sections (tower, water, embankment) are connected with brick-pins/holes so that they can be easily detached for added flexibility in building.

Figures include a knight, man-at-arms, jester (?!), and princess/queen. Bad guys include three skeletons (two white, one black) and a skeletal horse. Notable accessories for the figures include a scythe, mace, double-side halberds, the knight’s golden armor/visor, black cowl and cape for the undead leader, and a tiara for the princess (first time I’ve seen one of these).

This is a very good set. There are only two large pre-formed rock/wall elements and a decent amount of gray bricks for alternate possibilities. It would make a great stand-alone set or could be combined with one or two more of the same set to make a considerable mini-fortress. Here’s a suggested alternate model of a crypt using pieces from only this set.

Bottom line is I don’t agree with the $40 retail price of this set. If you can find it for $25 (or stretching it at $30) definitely snatch it up. True collectors will want to pick this up in multiples at a price of even up to $50 because these skeleton sets seem to skyrocket in price after just one or two years out of circulation. 4x2ReVu Stats Rating: Six out of eight studs. Thumbs up for: Good structure, great model and assortment of figures makes for an excellent standalone set. Thumbs down on: I don’t like the price (even considering inflation, $40 for 335 pieces is too much), but then again I’m still getting used to the modern market practice that pieces-out these sets and makes considerable money on parts alone. Wallet-Wise: $40.00 suggested U.S. retail for 335 pieces. Date: 3/22/2010
