Hi Isaac
Sorry for the delayed reply - I missed seeing your post when I was zipping
through the newsgroups last week.

Your
knights reminded me of a set of lead figures I used to have sitting on my
desk many years ago... I never thought someone would be able to capture so
well the essence of lead miniatures into lego form, until you came here and
show me :)
|
Interesting that you should see them that way, since (as Ive mentioned to you
before in private correspondence) my modelling background is in wargames and
military modelling. I suppose my approach to figure creation still shows some
influences of all those years work. :)
|
One comments that I have, however, would be that the plastic surface of the
Lego armor doesnt really match the sense of realism which obviously you were
going after with this series of figures.
|
Oddly enough, I wasnt trying to be particularly realistic with that set of
figures. To me, they look quite cartoony (even leaving aside the Arctic Pygmy
Hippopotamus shield blazon...). It just goes to show that different eyes will
see different things.
|
Have you, thus, given any
consideration to methods of giving the armors a more realistic look as well,
such as via TwoTonicKnights Rub nBuff method as hes outlined
here?

I certainly could do more textured painting (although Id be more inclined
to use paint than Rub nBuff - its more durable in the long run), but Ive
consciously avoided that style, both on armour and on my custom hair elements
(on various anime- and comicbook-related figures). I think it goes just a bit
beyond the Lego could do this line that I try to stay within for all of my
work.
|
Credits of both the tutorial and picture must go back to TwoTonicKnight. But
I think heres definitely a case where two different types of skills can
compliment each other very well.
|
If someone else wants to mix the two, Id be interested to see the result. Its
not something Im likely to try, I think, but thats more a matter of personal
(and idiosyncratic) taste than anything else.
|
Good job from you as always!
|
Thanks Isaac, both for the complement and the comments.
All the best,
Norbert Black
