A piece of posterboard is a good cheap solution. You can just curl it up to be
both a bottom and background. You can tape multiples together for larger
creations. The nice part is that it is a solid background, so it doesn't
distract from your creation and makes it pretty easy to photoedit. It also works
best to avoid using a flash. Natural light is great, or several carefully placed
lamps to eliminate shadows. Hope that helps.
