Hi!

A watchtower from the hills of the Lower Alps:

This was originally intended for the Classic Castle Contest, but as this came
around, it turned out to be older than the medieval castles, and didn't really
fit into any of the contest catagories.

Around year 560 the Asian tribe of the Avars invaded Europe; the Western part of
the Roman Empire had collapsed, and everywhere people was on the move. The
Northern tribe of the Longobards (literally: the Long Beards) fled from the
Avars over the Alps and into present day Lombardi in Northern Italy. They
differed from the Italic peoples in being high, blond and with long beards
(still today, many Lombardians are blond).
The Lombardi kingdom lasted for 150 years, but was ever pressed from especially
the Franks.
This MOC is an old ruined Roman Fort, overlooking the hills and vales on the
Italian side of the Alps, hastily rebuild with timbers by the Longobards.

Three floors: ground floor for storage, first floor for living quarters,
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=611763), and third floor for
keeping watch and shooting arrows.
There is no entrance to the ground floor (for safety reasons), entrance is via
the bridge from the wooden lookout.

I build this MOC from the top down, as it was originally a study in roof
designs.

The idea came after a chat with Richie Dulin on how to use 134 brown shovels.
The roof on the lookout is an attempt to use some surplus Indian shields.

Comments, anyone?

Coolness! That is the most unique way of building roofs i've ever seen. And I have to say, that is alot of brown shovels! I really like that rope bridge too. (20 years ago, 28-Dec-03, to lugnet.castle)

Maybe if I leave all my dark gray shovels out in the rain, I can have that many brown ones too. ; ) (20 years ago, 29-Dec-03, to lugnet.castle)
