My guess is that Kevin Loch has done this to cut down on storage space or made the database easier to search for the server, not for the end user. :(

The reasons that have been stated elsewhere (no time to dig now but try looking in threads hung off lugnet.announce.brickshelf) is actually related to privacy considerations. (don’t want to debate the validity of that here either, go find the right threads, there’s been a fair bit of discussion on it, if you have thoughts in that regard)
