1) The wooden pieces may be more expensive to produce than molded plastic
ones. But having seen this game up close, the wooden pieces make all the
difference.
2) Apparently it's quite possible to make your own game......... for free.
Using nothing more than the LEGO bricks you already own. :)
I like reason #2 the best.

I think it's a fantastic use of LEGO bricks. Not just another vehicle, or
building but something really out of the ordinary. Not that there's
anything wrong with vehicles or buildings, but this is certainly a nice change.
Gary... any thought about doing other games in LEGO? Or is this a one off?
