All settings are equal, other than not having radiosity switched on. As pointed
out in another post in this thread, it is not an either/or situation with ray
tracing and radiosity, you can blend both at the same time. The radiosity
hooklift render doesn't have any lights in it at all - does this mean it is pure
radiosity then? I'm sure entirely sure what is going on under the bonnet here,
so to speak.

so i have to say sorry to my friend who was right
i thought they will be comparable

From the POVRay manual:-

"Radiosity is an extra calculation that more realistically computes the diffuse
interreflection of light. This diffuse interreflection can be seen if you place
a white chair in a room full of blue carpet, blue walls and blue curtains. The
chair will pick up a blue tint from light reflecting off of other parts of the
room. Also notice that the shadowed areas of your surroundings are not totally
dark even if no light source shines directly on the surface. Diffuse light
reflecting off of other objects fills in the shadows. Typically ray-tracing uses
a trick called ambient light to simulate such effects but it is not very
accurate."

In other words, the main benefits you get from radiosity are more realistic
colour interactions between objects and softer shadows.

but what about the focal blur
in rt there is no focal blur i think

The focal blur is independent of ray tracing and radiosity - you can see it in
the ray traced render I posted, look at the top end of the tipper body for
instance.

thanx anyway
btw: what was the time of rendering (about value)
and resource consumption?

Without radiosity, the render time can be measured in hours. With radiosity, you
measure it in days. Memory consumption is also much, much greater with
radiosity.

thanx very much jennifer if this scene is rendered with the same settings then the quality of rs is much much better than rt so i have to say sorry to my friend who was right i thought they will be comparable but what about the focal blur in rt (...) (21 years ago, 17-Nov-03, to lugnet.cad.ray)
