LPub Difficulties

This may well be something very simple, but I'm not finding it.

I'm trying out LPub for the first time.  I had LDraw and MLCAD and had
created a number of .ldr files which I wanted to run through LPub.

Today I downloaded and installed POV-RAY, Mega-POV, L3P, and LGEO.  All
installed successfully.  I then ran through the LPub install and was also
successful.

When I started LPub, I identified the location of L3P.exe and then the LGEO
library.

Problem: When I go to Generate > Complete Assembly, POV-RAY runs and in the
end generates the message:

Could not find file 'C:\LDRAW\MODELS\brickquest\12x24.pov'

Scene file parser initialization error.
Cannot open input file.

Returned from renderer (non-zero return value)

LPub then, of course, says that it couldn't find the generated BMP.  In the
process of trying to resolve this, I've uninstalled and reinstalled LPub,
and gone in and found the file which sets the L3P directory and verified it.
It looks to me like L3P never runs to convert the 12x24.ldr into 12x24.pov

Any ideas what could be causing this, or what I need to do to fix it?

Another, probably unrelated and unhelpful, problem is when I go to Generate
Instruction Images in LPub, the LPub status window reads:

Creating step DATs for 12x24.ldr
Creating 12x24_l.pov
Creating 12x24_c.pov
Creating 12x24_00.pov

at which point I get a dialog box:

Access violation at address 0042DB55 in module 'LPUB.EXE'. Read of address
015A2CB0.

Both of these are repeated problems.  I have exited both programs, used Task
Manager to ensure that they are really ended, and even rebooted before
running again, and I constantly have the same problems.

Any ideas?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using the L3P executable from http://www.hassings.dk/l3/download.html ;
I'm using POV-RAY 3.1g and the matching MegaPOV 0.7 (I know there are newer
versions but these are the ones that the LPub documentation referred to)

Thanks,
Peter

(...) Hi Peter, Thanks for all the good info. What version of Windows are you running on? If you send me your DATs, I can try to run them here. Also send me your config.lpb from the LPub install directory. Kevin <snip> (22 years ago, 11-Apr-03, to lugnet.cad.ray)
