Henry -
L3P (or POV, I'm not sure) has a problem with color when converting LDraw
files that contain single parts. To get around this, you can select the -c
(Color) switch in L3PAO, and choose among the original 16 LDraw colors. You
can also manually enter a color number, but I haven't tested it to see if it
accurately renders the number you enter when it is not one of the original 16.
Hope this helps.
