It is looking left but at the right side of the model.

I think axis signs confirm your intuition:

* Bottom to Top is positive to negative Y
* Back to Front is positive to negative Z
* Left to Right should be positive to negative X

It can also be a matter of point of view. A minifig's left hand is to the right
in the picture when you looked at "face to face".
