I've got some comments below, but for now, let's stick with the two
documented part numbers.  If someone wants to create these non-functional
variations of the part(s), I'm ok with that.  But let's not get into xxxxA,
xxxxB, etc., until we have to.

You don't happen to have estimates of the years for any of these changes, do
you?

No, sorry - the bulk of this research was from (a lot of) miscellanous parts in
my spares box, and I cannot be sure of the providence of many of my made up
sets, so any info from them would be near worthless.

The probable sequence of these changes with the colours I can confirm is

3941 (and other older un-numbered versions) : 1A 2A 3A : (suggest 3941a)
- Blue Yellow Black White Grey

Change to include small rib
3941 (number part visible under rib)        : 1B 2A 3A : (suggest 3941b)
- Red Blue Yellow Black White ClrYellow

So much for the opaque/clear theory - unless using different molds for
opaque & clear is an approach TLC developed over time.

Unless problems with the use of this mould for the (earlier) ClrYellow prompted
a new mould for the (later) ClrFluorOrange, ClrFluorGreen, Clear.

Change to include larger rib - possibly important for trans parts
???? (number not visible on my parts)       : 1C 2A 3A : (suggest 3941c)
- ClrFluorOrange ClrFluorGreen Clear

Interesting - I'm looking at one of these (from an Exploriens 6938 Scorpion
Detector), the only number is '61 16' (the 2 pairs of digits are separated
by an under-stud hollow).

Strange, that's rather high for the presumed mould-well numbers, usually like 1
06. Perhaps this varient really has got a different official number?

Change to gripping extensions
3941 (number not visible on all parts)      : 1C 2B 3A : (suggest 3941d)
- Red Yellow Black White Grey Brown

Hmm.  Is the number visible on *any* of these parts?

I found it on just one black version - until then I thought the much
more visible gripping extension change had triggered the change from 3941 to
6143.

Change to axle hole rib ends
6143 (number not visible on all parts)      : 1C 2B 3B : (suggest 6143)
- Red Yellow Black White Brown

So, Steve it looks like your classification includes just 3941d and 6143, but
3941-like varients are definitely not confined to transparent colours. • Strange
that the part number change is linked to the smallest of variations - and the
two numbers are almost anagrams of each other.

The anagram thing happens a lot - or at least, it seems to.
