Go ahead, if you feel the need for loading part libraries. In my L3
project I just retain parts in memory once loaded. I wouldn't waste
time on preloading parts no-one needs.

I'm thinking of the case where foo.dat only appears in the MPD file
fooarchive.dat, such as would happen if someone replaced the whole P
directory with a single MPD file to save disk space, or if I
chose to distribute my unofficial Throwbot parts as a single MPD
to better maintain artistic control.

I think it's OK to load an MPD as a parts library in order to
search parts in there, rather than in the usual directories.
But I hope you agree that the well-known semantics of "1 16 0 0 0
1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 parts.dat" should not be changed to depend on
the contents of parts.dat?

Now, how do you specify the libraryname then? I suggested you used
a META command. You also mentioned something about startup files.
Or you could have a special "Open Parts Library" menu entry.
But I think you should consider carefully how this library concept
should function.

How would you distribute a Throwbot model? In two files, the model
(having a "0 USEPARTSFROM Throwbot.mpd") and Throwbot.mpd with the
parts?

How long would you keep the MPD subfiles in ldlite memory? What if
you had a leg.dat subfile in Throwbot.mpd. After admiring your
Throwbot model, the user decides to load his own mymodel.mpd, which
also has a leg.dat! (The latter leg.dat should of course overwrite
the old leg.dat, I just try to say there may be "more to this than
meets the eye" (expr?)).

I don't think that anyone would replace the whole P directory with
a single MPD to save disk space, as it would mean giving up ALL
programs but ldlite!
But if you think you could save some time by loading such an MPD
it might be an idea to maintain this P.MPD.

/Lars
