Good news for Autocad part developers !
My stl2dat converter now reads binary stl files. It recognises binary files automatically.
I also introduced a new option to set the origin, because some cad-cam programs can only produce stl files where all
coordinates are positive. This option allows to set the origin for the dat file.
The syntax is:
stl2dat <file.stl> -o X Y Z "Part description" "Author name"
Example:
stl2dat x000.dat -o 100 100 50 "My part" "My name"
The binary stl is of course also valid for other cad-cam programs, including Solidworks.
I have updated the stl.reg file so STL binary is now used.
Files are available here :

Here is an extract of Autocad documentation about creation of stl files:
To export stl files from Autocad :
1 From the File menu, choose Export.
2 In the Export Data dialog box, enter a file name.
3 At Save As Type, select Lithography (*.stl), and then choose Save.
4 Select one or more solid objects. All objects must be entirely within the positive XYZ octant of the WCS. That
is, their X, Y, and Z coordinates must be greater than zero.
5 Press ENTER to create a binary file.
AutoCAD automatically appends the file extension .stl to the file name.
Command line STLOUT
Related You can use the FACETRES system variable to control the resolution of the mesh that is created by these
triangles.
