Ok, I've made significant progress on this part (Thanks John! Thanks
Steve!).  In the process, I have made 3 "new" primitives (actually
modifications of existing ones):

1-4con1
1-4ring3
1-4ring10

These were necessary to maintain the geometry, though I could inline
them, but I think that the general trend is towards using primitives for
rounded objects.

There is still a 'primitives committee' which discusses new primitives
before they are released.  We decided awhile ago to not introduce new
primitive files, until/unless they were actually used in a file.  Which is
why the ldraw/p/ directory isn't stuffed full of *-4con*.dat primitives.
But I don't foresee a problem with adding these new files, when 30384 is
published.

I'm having a bit of trouble at the very tip of the canopy, where a VERY
steep cone sort of turns into a 3-axis contoured bevel that is not quite
spherical.  What is the best way to treat this?  I'll post the dat files
to lugnet.cad.dat.parts for people to look at tonight (I'm rushed right
now.. gotta run to an appointment)..

(I haven't looked at your posted file yet--hope this isn't obsolete advice)

I'd start by making a new subfile for the tip. Put a 1-8sphe.dat in the
subilfe.  Scale the primitive to the right size and shape, so the angle of
cone is tangent to the sphere where the sphere intersects the edge of the
cone.  This will leave about half of the primitive 'inside' the cone.  So
inline the sphere primitive, and lop off everything that needs to be
removed.
