You can do this in several ways:
You could add a comment to the author line, such as:
0 Author: Dave Schuler! (based on 3298.dat by James Jessiman)
You could add a second author line:
0 Author: James Jessiman (plain piece)
0 Author: Dave Schuler! (decoration)
You could add maintenance comments, after the header:
0 Slope Brick 33 3 x 2 with Freestyle Pattern
0 Name: 3298xxxx.dat
0 Author: Dave Schuler!
0 1999-12-10 DS! Copied code from 3298.dat to new 3298pxxx.dat
0 1999-12-10 DS! Added decorative pattern
