Dear Listers,

At last I finished this tiny but tricky part. I won't attach dat file because it is more than 120 Kbytes.
Instead, I have uploaded it to Brickshelf.

Also you can find some test pictures there: a happy minifig wearing his brand new lifevest :-)

Maybe I chose a bit too fine resolution to model the curved surfaces and that increased the dat file size.
However I think that resolution gives a sufficent quality when the part is viewed in PovRay.

Few words on the part creation process.

I measured the main dimensions of the lifevest and I drew the approximate bounding shapes in three different views, (top, from
right) on millimeter paper.
Since I have access to the a professional CAD software (MicroStation), I entered the helper lines, shapes into a MicroStation design
file.
I drew the strait edges and flat surfaces with the software's basic drawing tools
With the software's sophisticated 3D surface modelling tools I approximated the real part's surfaces.
Since these are continuous surface elements and they can not be interpreted in the DAT format, I applied a mesh generator utility in
MicroStation to substitute continuous surfaces with sets of triangles. These process needed several attempt, because the generated
mesh was not always aligned correctly.
Having only lines, triangles and quads the design file I used a small utility that I have written earlier to export these elements
into DAT format.
Then I used Excel to generate the optional lines form the existing coordinates.
Finally I wrapped the result in a dat file.

If you have any comment on the part please let me know, in order to correct the possible issues before I submit the part to the
voting process.

Thanks

Ampi

Dear List, Without offending anybody, I kindly ask you to have a glance on this part in order to get some feedback. Although I tried to make it as perfect as I could, but the part author gurus surely will have valuable comments on it. After that I'd (...) (24 years ago, 15-Feb-01, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
