That would be cool.  Not as smooth as I'd like, but cool.

Another approach, hexagonal cylinders, is to start with a 6-sided flower,
make a column of about 4 1x1s and put another flower on top, attach 1x8
plates studs inward, and build out. This core with 1x8 plates makes a nice
looking pillar. There should be some solution with a perimeter of about 18,
asuming you have tons of 1x3 plates to put on it.

Hmm.  You mean start with Very Small Flower?  No, that wouldn't
stack.  Maybe flower on a 1x1 round brick?

If it looks like I imagine it might, it could be very nice.  If built out to
about 6 studs diameter, each face would be 3 studs wide, and there might be
enough room to break up the hexagonal profile by running 1xN plates
vertically.  Hmm.  I'll have to try this.

Perhaps there is a way to make a ring of pod racer fins.

That's an interesting thought.

I had this 6-sided pillar in http://olson.pair.com/moc/moria/moria4.html but
I see I accidentally mirrored it into oblivion this week. I'll put it back
tonight...

I still can't see it. :(

obLdrawIdea: Here's a new mpd of 1x1 brick-based cylinder, that's actually
been built (more or less).  I think it looks interesting, I could see it
being used in a MOC, but it's not what I'm looking for now.

I'm still working on a practical implementation of a cylinder from tiles.
