Is there a way to view LDraw DAT files that are posted to models directly from

on the fly, or do I just need to save them to a file and use lDraw.

Yes you can, by using LDLite.  LDLite is a windows DAT file viewer that runs
off your existing LDraw parts library.  At the moment, Paul Gyugyi's LDLite
page is down as he tried to get his site back online.  I thought there was an
ldraw.org download page for it, but I checked and there wasn't.  I guess you'll
have to be patient and wait for Paul to recover his site :(
