AVI converter program?

I was wondering if some one could suggest a good program for converting avi's
to a more web friendly format. My rendering software produces animations in
AVI format but they are a little large for web aplications. It will render an
animation in individual still frames (though not directly into gif format), so
i could use a gif animator with a some work.
If your interested here is a sample of a page i have running avi right now

min or two to download and it has a preview jpg.
any suggestions you could give would be helpful
