It's short for LDraw Add-On. It's a program I wrote as a GUI front-end
LDraw. It was too hard to learn, remember and type all of LDraw's
command-line options. So I threw LDAO together for my personal use, but
didn't publish it.
Before LDAO's first public release, it became a victim to the dreaded
programming disease 'creeping featuritis'. Heck, overloaded features were
the reason it was first released publicly: I had added a Visual Element
Catalog (VEC) to LDAO, and after someone asked about a similar program, I
cleaned up LDAO, and put it on my web page.
These days, LDAO is a Win95/98/NT/2000[1] program for launching LDraw,
LEdit, and related tools. It is also useful for browsing the LDraw parts
library, for editing parts and models, and it provides a few other
LDraw-related utilities.
You can find LDAO at <http://home.att.net/~blisses/ldao/ldaddon.html>.
