Typically, that's true for my stuff, but this one is based upon the very real
USAF A-10A Thunderbolt II (aka "Warthog") tank killer / ground attack fighter.
The latest issue of _Smithsonian Air & Space_ has a pretty interesting article
on it. (1)

I grab any book I can find with photos, clip art, graphics, sketches, etc. of
any weird-looking aircraft / spaceship / whatever. The uglier, the better.
:-,
I just got the "Colonial Space Marines Technical Manual" (pretty psyched about
that one), a book on the "worst aircraft in the world", and a book on concept
cars. The innovation in those books just staggers me, even if most of the
stuff never worked. :-P

1. For example, did you know that in the event of failure in both hydraulic
and backup cable systems, all three landing gear can free-fall into position
for landing? Like, wow. Why don't they do this kind of stuff with commercial
airliners?
