Thanks Bruce and Nelson.
I just discovered that I had mis-remembered (and misspelled) the term; The
device I was thinking of is a stereoscope, not a stereopticon.
Stereoscopic images are an old means of depicting a scene. There used to be film
cameras with two lenses that would take simultaneous images. I imagine they
still exist and there may be digital versions too, but its not necessary to buy
another camera to experiment with the technique. I tried it many years ago with
a film camera, and, while I found the result satisfactory, I never pursued it.
I remembered the technique this past summer when I was taking photographs and
checking them on the viewscreen. Thats the beauty of using a digital camera.
Anyway, the image was lacking something and I realized it was the third
dimension, so I started taking two pictures of a scene with a slight shift of
the camera for the second shot. This works fine for static scenes and you can
adjust the depth by varying the distance between the two shots. A scene will
look natural to you if the shots are taken the same distance apart as your eyes.
A stereoscope can help when viewing such images but I find I can shift my eyes
enough to see them. Its the same method that those magic-eye things relied
upon.
The height of this vignette seemed like the perfect opportunity to debut this
technique here. Have fun with it.
Peace and camera tricks, Professor Whateverly

| Wow, there must be something in the air. I just built a vignette, and here's a place to post it. I've been recently inspired by (URL), (URL) Adrian> and (URL) Mitch>, and now I see that there is much more here to be inspired by. So, I offer you my (...)
