Hello all - I’ve been a long-time occasional lurker to Lugnet, but I’ve only recently become a “real” member, and this is my first ever posting.

I’m quite new to the concept of Vignettes; normally my creations are at a larger scale. The challenge of squeezing a story into an 8x8 space really caught my fancy and here is some of my work in that area. Hopefully I’ve set this up right so you can click through to the brickshelf galleries.

This was my very first attempt - “Snacktime.“ I was kind of surprised that it turned out as well as it did. I was fond of the other Vignettes I had seen on Brickshelf that had items/creatures extending past the 8x8 shown in the vignette, so I tried to explore a similar concept.

My second attempt, “Mortimer Island”, has a bit of a secret to it. When seen from the right angles the puzzle comes clear.

Next, I made one for a friend who’s favorite word is “Puddle.“ While discussing it in my journal the concept of using one-word-titles for the Vignettes to create a “Brictionary” of terms came up. After “Snacktime”, above, this would be the second entry.

Next into the Brictionary was the word “Sushi”. I’m most proud of finding a home for an off-green baseplate.

And then came “Wombat”. It doesn’t have quite the sense of “fun” that the other vignettes have, but you can move the critter around for a lame “action feature”.

Finally, my latest work, “Mayhem.“ I built this one while waiting for people to show up to a movie screening we were having. I had built the robot earlier, and had wanted to do something combining the micro and vignette concepts. I was also inspired by watching Godzilla movies earlier that week.

Anyway. Hello to everyone....I welcome your critiques and suggestions. I’d like to get better at this!

Chris

Hi Chris, Welcome aboard! I really like your work and you maybe have noticed that many of them have been highlighted on my blog (URL). There's a lot of great humor in there, like the octopus holding chopsticks or the depth of that puddle. Keep up (...) (19 years ago, 10-May-05, to lugnet.build.vignette, FTX)
