LSculpt should work directly with STL files too.

I tried converting my Solidworks files to .STL and using them directly with
lsculpt, but it didnt like them and only rendered an empty .ldr containing >

If you run it in verbose mode (command line option -v), it should give you some
feedback along the way (like the final size in studs) that might point out
whats going wrong. You can scale your models using the -f, -u, or -s command
line options (explained a bit in the readme)

Im truly serious when I say that lsculpt is *groundbreaking* software.
Studs-out is the *only* way to represent items with sufficient 1x1
resolution in all axes!

Well, there is the drawback of consuming inordinate quantities of small plates.
You can never have enough 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, and 2x2 corner plates. 1x4, 2x2, and
2x3 are handy too.

Bram, which studs-out anchor bricks have you found most useful when
you rendered the babe sculpture? 1x4 w/side studs? 2x2 with studs
on dual-sides? Have you found a suitable 1x2 with studs-out for the
smaller connection details? Did you resort to any blaspheme GLUE
/blaspheme to keep her rigid?

Certainly no glue!
Since LSculpt works on a 2x2x2 stud grid, SNOT parts with flush studs on one
side are the most convenient. Unfortunately, there isnt much selection there,
so I ended up using quite a few
with pins. I hardly have
any
in black, so I could only use them where there was room
to completely hide them. Theres an occasional headlight brick turned on its
side too, but that requires some hollow space behind the brick.
Sometimes, theres room for parts at halfway points in the 2x2x2 grid, so
1x2-2x2 bracket would be handy...if I had any in black. Instead, I used
several
The new bricks with studs on both sides arent that useful for LSculpt-ures,
since you can only attach to one side of the brick if you want everything to
line up right. Id prefer not to use Technic bricks with pins since you have to
cover the back of the brick to hide the pins, the pins are pretty loose, and the
positioning isnt 100% compatible with other SNOT parts.
The difficulties of building this sculpture in a structurally sound manner
actually prompted me to come up with a few of my own wishful thinking part
designs:
I used finger hinges in one or two places where that last one might have been
useful.
The bigger you build studs out, the easier it is to connect everything together
and make it strong, which is where those 1x4 bricks come in really handy.
However, building bigger will require even more plates! --Bram
