I first saw a Lego mosaic during the master builder tryouts about a year ago
(no, I wasn't a finalist), and thought it was pretty cool. I had the simple
idea then to make an ace of spades mosaic, but I never really got around to
it.
Then in early December there was a story on slashdot about Eric's the 7ft
clock. I started looking through all his projects, and realized that the
playing card was not a new idea (doh!), as Eric had done the suicide king
long before I had even thought of my ace.
Well, this motivated me to finally start work on my first mosaic, but I
decided the ace was to plain, and a joker would be a better project. I
googled around for a joker image, found one, cleaned it up, and spent a few
days drawing it in ldraw. Once it was finished in ldraw, I had the parts
manifest and was able order all 6,000+ parts I would need from bricklink. I
bought mostly used bricks as it was much easier on the pocket book too
(about $150 total). Anyways, that was back on Dec. 15th. Finally on the
29th, all my parts were here, and I got started. You can see the progress in
the photo gallery here:

It was a very fun build. I managed to get it done in about 17 hours. It is
still unglued though, and I am still trying to decide if I should buy all
new white bricks before gluing it, as some of the used white bricks are in
less than new condition. All of the other colors look very good though.
There is also still a small black border I will be building around it, sort
of as a frame. Once it is all glued together, I plan to hang it in my home
office. The current borderless dimensions are: 30,25 inches wide, and 49
inches tall. Looking back, I probably should have made it a little smaller
:)
Anyways, any and all feedback is welcome.

I love it! The design and colors are perfect, and the build looks great. I'd love to see pics of it when it's on the wall. -Elroy (20 years ago, 31-Dec-04, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

Nice job! Very eye-catching. Pretty huge for a first try. (and I like seeing my Santa in the back) :) Corey (20 years ago, 1-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

(...) Don't start glueing yet. You may have seen how my (URL) 42 mosaic> is hung. My mosaic is really hanging (it doesn't fall apart thanks to the frame), so I can easily lift it off the "hooks" and take it with me. If you have no intention at all (...)
