Yeah, this is kind of sick, but its based on real events. Dont ask me how
because I cant remember but the topic of Mine Dogs came up in a recent chat
session, and my befuddled mind decided to build one.
In WWII The Soviets trained half-starved dogs to hunt for snacks under tanks.
Having been suitably trained, theyd then strap bombs to the dogs backs and
send them towards enemy lines. In theory, the dogs would see a tank and scramble
underneath to look for food (the armour is thinner at the bottom of a tank)
whereupon a wooden lever at the top would press down in the narrow gap and
trigger the bomb.
Pretty gruesome.
However...it didnt work terribly well as the dogs had been trained to look for
food under Soviet tanks, not German Panzers, so theyd actually head back the
other way. Also, LostCarPark suggested (and it sounds reasonable to me) that
because the German tanks used different fuel, they smelled different and this
put the dogs off. In addition, the Germans simply learned to shoot any dogs on
sight.
Piccy of the real thing:
And no, Tabletown will not be deploying these in the war at any time in the
future.
