It's been awhile since I've built anything, got in sort of a rut with mecha.
I got the urge to start doing some WWII stuff and boy am I happy with this
MOC.

Check out some teaser pics:

One of the keys to making this moc look good is that I didn't rely on any
clear canopy parts, since basicly there aren't any good ones for a p-51.
Instead, I used dark gray slopes and a pair of click hinges, and got a
surprisingly very accurately shaped cockpit.  I did this once before on my
B-Wing moc and it turned out good, so that gave me the idea here.  Also,
notice the prop.  It's not an existing part, but looks nice, and even allows
the colored tips.  The last part that is unique and really sells the
authenticity is the dihedral angle of the wings.  Most WWII fighters have
this angle, and without it, the models just don't look right.  The most
challenging part of the model was coming up with a way to lock the wings at
the right angle.  Click hinges don't work, since the clicks angles are too
steep.  I used a hinge under the wing, and inside, another hinge.

The only change I plan to make is to use a different construction on the
auxiliary fuel tanks.  These are too small and I don't like the dark gray
color.  I don't have just the right parts to make them better, but I'll be
ordering them from bricklink.

Some other notes:  Landing gear aren't retractable, there aren't any movable
control surfaces.  Doing so would have sacrificed authenticity on the wing
shapes.

I plan to have this model professionally photographed so hold on for some
bigger and better pics.

(...) Congratulations to a fantastic model. Your model is the best Lego Mustang I have seen so far. You are setting a new standard here. I can also see that you are very familiar with this beautiful aircraft. You must explain in more detail the (...) (21 years ago, 8-Oct-03, to lugnet.build.military)

Beautiful. There's something very satisfying about seeing proven building techniques applied so perfectly and so thoroughly. I'm going to have to see the final photographs. Take care, Soren (URL) (21 years ago, 8-Oct-03, to lugnet.build.military, FTX)
