TS: Personally, Id qualify you as an A-list comics illustrator - whats it like
penciling icons such as The Man of Steel?
SI: Well, thanks! Honestly, I try not to think about it. One of my first big
jobs was working on DCs Legion of Superheroes, which has one of the most avid
fan bases of all comics; they dont let you get away with anything, and
everybodys got theyre one favourite character, who never gets enough screen
time. Basically, I just try to do my best work, no matter whether I have a
personal attachment to the character or not. You know, I just want to be
professional. But it is a thrill to have a hand in creating stories that people
all over the world read, and, on occasion, just as thrilling to get to meet
those fans. I had an opportunity to travel to northern Spain last summer for a
comic convention and it was one of the best experiences Ive ever had.
TS: So is Canada a hotbed for illustrators? (Greg Hyland being a Canuck as well)
SI: Yes, I really think so! Greg Ive known on and off for years, and theres a
big comics community in our neck of the woods. On one hand, youve got Dreamwave
Studios, Dale Keown, Ty Templeton, Ron Boyd, Jason Armstrong, Dave Ross and
others holding up the superhero end of things, and creators like Chester Brown,
Joe Matt and Seth on the independent side. Then there are people like Darwyn
Cooke and Jay Stephens who sort of bridge the gap. And some guys named McFarlane
and Byrne used to live here....
I didnt really know about Stuart until you posted this question. Personally, I
find that his Mecha heads can be a little small (sometimes almost non-existent),
but these two Mechas are quite excellent (IMHO):
Thanks for bringing Stuart to everyones attention.
