These are really great renders, they came out looking like sketches or
paintings (or cartoons, actually), which really rocks. Can you talk about
how you did them? Pov? MegaPOV? Bryce? Something else? And did you do any
post processing?

Thanks!

Glad you like these, I use 3dStudio to render the images (I modeled all the
peices myself).  One of the tricks to making it look "cartoonish" is using
self illumination (about 35%) on the materials, that way the colors are
vibrant and you don't get dark shadows.  Another trick I use for the
outlines is duplicating all the objects, applying a wireframe material to
them, then moving the duplicate objects fractionally towards the camera.
That gives you the black outlines around all the peices.  I don't have any
special plugins for rendering cel-shading, so that's the trick I came up
with to duplicate it as close as possible.  I also use ray-traced shadows,
which take a long time to render, but the affect is nice.

I didn't do any post-processing of the images, unless you count the
matte/frame, or the signiture (both of which make them look more like a
piece of artwork).

I really like the way these images came out, but man they are a lot of work.
Just building the model is time consuming, but posing it is just as bad.  Oh
well, you can't get good looking images without putting in the effort.

I plan to model my latest MOC in the same manner, it's a mecha inspired by
Five Star Stories designs.  The MOC has been done for a couple weeks, but it
will be awhile before I get some renders of it.

Thanks,

-Dave Jr.
